Transcript/notes
Blueberries are one of the most nutrient rich foods on the planet. They are the fruit of a highbush blueberry shrub that grows between 6 and 12 feet tall. They are first green, then a reddish-purple and finally blue, and they are typically ready for picking between June and August.

1 cup of blueberries provides about 84 calories, less than a gram of fat, 21 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of protein, 3.6 grams of fiber, and about 15 grams of sugar. Blueberries have a great micronutrient profile, as they are high in vitamin C, which plays an important role as an antioxidant and promotes skin, bone and ligament health, vitamin K1, which is involved in blood clotting and bone health, and Manganese, which plays a role in healing wounds, bone formation and the metabolism of amino acids.

Blueberries also contain antioxidants than help to protect cells from harmful free radicals and are linked to a decreased risk of many diseases, such as heart disease and high blood pressure, and they have also been linked to improved brain function and memory.

Blueberries also are high in fiber, which can help improve gut health, bowel health, lower cholesterol levels, aid in weight control and in removing toxins from the body.

Blueberries can be a rather inexpensive snack at about $4.39 per pound or for 16 ounces, which equates to about $1.48 for a 1 cup serving, and the United States is the largest producer of blueberries.

And they can be eaten raw as a healthy snack, added to many baked goods, such as blueberry muffins, you can add them to cereal, to salads, and even to smoothies.

Bottom line is that blueberries really are a great, and healthy food with links to bone health, brain health, gut health, and antioxidant benefits.
