1. BEST: Extreme Milk Chocolate

There’s a persistent myth that Double Rich Chocolate is the best ON flavor, but here’s the thing: it isn’t. It tastes like plain cocoa powder with glucose added — not bitter, but not sweet, and very boring when mixed with water.

Extreme Milk Chocolate is the best flavor. It’s sweeter, richer, and goes really well with both water and milk.

2. BEST VANILLA: Vanilla Ice Cream

There is more than one vanilla flavor at Optimum Nutrition, and while Vanilla Crème is relatively nice and mild, Vanilla Ice Cream is where it’s at. It tastes like melted down vanilla ice cream, which we can all agree is the best way to eat vanilla.

3. CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER

It’s hard to go wrong with chocolate peanut butter. If the chocolate’s too bland, the peanuts come to the rescue, and that’s the case with Gold Standard’s CPB flavor — nice and creamy in milk, and nice and roasted peanutty in water.

4. MOST UNDERRATED: WHITE CHOCOLATE

You can only get White Chocolate in 5-pound tubs so a lot of people overlook it, but I think it’s the most underrated flavor. Now, I actually like white chocolate in real life, so if that’s not you, then you naturally won’t be a fan of this protein powder. It’s sweet, but I found it especially useful when making big, spinach-filled shakes that needed some sweetness.

5. ROCKY ROAD

This is a compelling flavor that’s one of the favorites of our Fitness Editor, Jake Boly. Rocky Road, of course, is chocolate and marshmallow combined, and this protein powder tastes like chocolate and *pink* marshmallows, so the end product is a little like a chocolate cherry flavor.

6. MOST CONTROVERSIAL: COOKIES & CREAM

Everyone at the BarBend office has tried this one, and the result has been about 50% love it, 50% hate it. This is a flavor that’s notoriously difficult for protein companies to get right, but ON has changed their formulation in recent years and after endless bad versions, we found this one to be surprisingly tasty. Well, half of us. Try it if you like to gamble.
